Intruder Response & Workplace Violence Preparation for Public Entities

Description:
This course is designed to be customizable and flexibly integrated to be an effectively
and legally defensible training and continuing education “workplace violence” and “intruder response” solution for businesses, corporations, schools/school districts, colleges/
universities or churches/religious organizations.

Simply put “Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail!”. Most schools, businesses and public places regularly institute policies, procedures, plans and conduct drills for natural disasters however very little pre-thought or pre-planning has been established for response to a dangerous intruder. A dangerous intruder can take the form of a disgruntled employee, customer, vendor, parishioner, student, or stockholder. Training employees, management and security personnel in recognizing the warning signs or indicators of personnel can and has been critically important to preventing a potentially tragic incident(s) prior to them occurring. Additionally properly training employees how to respond effectively should a critical intruder response incident occur will greatly enhance a safe outcome for each of them.

    Employee involvement and feedback enable workers to develop and express their own commitment to safety and health and provide useful information to design, implement and evaluate the program.

    Placing safeguards/countermeasures to protect the employees.
  • Administrative and work practice controls to minimize risk
    Administrative and work practice controls affect the way staff perform jobs or tasks. Changes in work practices and administrative procedures can help prevent violent incidents.
  • Training for all employees
    Employees who may face safety and security hazards should receive formal instruction on the specific hazards associated with the unit or job and facility.
  • There are five common classifications of violence which can occur in the workplace
    Employee workplace violence, Affiliated workplace violence, Occupational workplace violence, Random workplace violence and Hate violence.
  • Employee Responsibilities
    It is the responsibility of every employee to assist and cooperate in making the workplace as safe as possible.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    Supervisors play a critical role in the creation of a safe workplace environment by reducing the potential for workplace violence through the fair, impartial, and consistent application of recognized supervisory practices.
  • Management Responsibilities
    It is the responsibility of all managers to encourage their employees to report any suspected violation of this policy.
  • Risk Assessment
    Assessment in the workplace can be easily identified by some existing psychological or behavioral profiling.
  • Threat Management
    Regardless of the source, all threats or indications of potential violence should be taken seriously. Violations of the Zero Tolerance Policy should be reported.
  • Situation Management
    Workplace violence is primarily an organizational issue long before there is any law enforcement involvement. The organization needs to address the Action Steps that would be taken in an incident would to occur.
  • Safety Protocols
    To deal with if there is a Suspicious Individuals outside or inside the building, Threat outside the building, Threat inside the building, Threat comes into your class or office.
  • Law Enforcement Response
    How Law Enforcement will respond, and what they will do upon their arrival.
  • Personal Security Planning
    Teaching employees to develop their individual security plan were a critical intruder incident to occur. Developing in advance plans for securing in place vs. immediate evacuation are critical for survival for employees, students/faculty, or attendees.
  • Intruder Response Scenario Drilling
    Scenario design and drilling for safely conducting “intruder response” exercises for employees, middle and upper management.
  • Security & Site Surveys
    Review of existing facilities, foot traffic flow, visitor sign in procedures and evacuation flow and procedures. Recommendations for construction changes, procedural changes, and training recommended.
